The Medford area offers outstanding diversity in outdoor recreational opportunities. County rivers and lakes combine with federal, state, and county forests to offer the finest in year-round recreation. Taylor County is noted for excellent small game, deer and waterfowl hunting. Game fish and panfish are plentiful with almost 100 lakes in the area. The Chequamegon National Forest covers one-third of Taylor County, providing unlimited opportunities for hiking, camping, bird and wildlife watching, fishing and hunting. Taylor County maintains an excellent forest and park system offering some of the best camping, picnicking, swimming and fishing in the state. Cross-country ski trails abound and over 300 miles of snowmobile trails, professionally groomed by the Taylor County Snowmobile Association and eleven snowmobile clubs, are available for winter recreational use.
ICE
AGE TRAIL. The longest unbroken stretch of the National Scenic Ice Age Trail - 60
miles of it - is in Taylor County. It offers some of the best hiking in the state. (state ice age trail web site)
THE PINE LINE. The Pine Line is a
rail-trail in Taylor and Price Counties. The actual trail is 26.2 miles long and is named
for the huge quantities of eastern white pine shipped on the route between 1876 and 1988
by the Wisconsin Central Railroad and because of the beautiful stands of pine which
presently clothe the trail. The Pine Line is open for non-motorized use such as bicycling,
hiking and jogging from April 1-November 30. pony Express ride has also been added.
Snowmobile and ATV's are allowed on the trail from December 1-March 31 ( weather
permitting). There are no fees for trail use. Annual events are scheduled on the trail
such as the Pine Line Marathon held the fourth
Saturday of April. (For a map of the trail please contact the Chamber Office)

link) (Medford/Taylor Made ATV Club)
CAMP 8
ATV TRAIL. Twelve miles of trail with additions being considered. The trail is
located entirely on county forest property. The trails are for the most part old logging
roads developed through forest management. Terrain varies from flat to very hilly. Trails
cross small streams and poorly drained areas, so please use discretion to avoid erosion
and damage to vegetation. This is a two-way trail used by other recreationists, so
reasonable speed and awareness of others is required. There are six rustic campsites which
have access to a hand pump well and vault toilet. There is no-fee camping with no
reservation system. (map available by clicking on the link)
